Packers Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)Head coach Mike McCarthy had an uneasy disposition going into the Packers' well-attended intrasquad scrimmage at Lambeau Field on Saturday night. After packing more than a dozen segments into 66 minutes of on-field action, McCarthy was no less concerned about the tenuous health of his team only eight days into training camp. "The number one score that I am interested in is our medical report," McCarthy said. "You want to come out of this controlled scrimmage healthy, there is no doubt about it. But, at some point, you are going to be in live action." By unleashing the players to tackle, cut and deliver hits in the air in front of a crowd of 47,844 at the family-themed event, injuries that McCarthy wanted to avoid wound up coming to the forefront. He announced... Packers place CB Josh Bell on injured reserve (AP)The Green Bay Packers have placed Josh Bell on injured reserve, compounding their depth problems at cornerback. The team did not give a reason for the move, but Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Monday that Bell had a foot sprain. No early advantage between Packers' punters (AP)The first live-action situations in the competition between Tim Masthay and Australian Chris Bryan didn't give either punter an advantage. It only convinced Green Bay coach Mike McCarthy of two things: the Packers have their two most talented punters in the past three years and that it's likely going to come down to the end of camp to decide who'll stay and who'll be released.

Notebook: Pickett, Raji Offer Flexibility For D-LineHaving players with versatility at any position is a plus, and that is no different for a Packers defensive line that lined up differently during the team's first open OTA practice than it did last season.
With last season's starting left defensive end Johnny Jolly absent from Wednesday's voluntary workout since he has yet to sign his free-agent tender, the Packers' No. 1 defensive line was comprised of Ryan Pickett at left end, B.J. Raji at nose tackle, and Cullen Jenkins at right end. Defensive line coach Mike Trgovac said the move was more about making sure Raji and Pickett get enough work at both spots so they are comfortable if injuries occur like they did last season. Pickett was the team's primary nose tackle in '09 while Raji worked mainly at left end and inside in sub packages. The 337-pound Raji, who missed the first two weeks of training camp last year as a rookie since he had not signed a contract yet, also was sidelined for two games in the se.. Burnett In Prime Position To Learn, CompeteFor a rookie in his first week of professional football practices, safety Morgan Burnett couldn't ask for a better opportunity to show he belongs.
The third-round draft pick out of Georgia Tech is getting all his reps during the current organized team activities (OTAs) with the first-team defense alongside Pro Bowler Nick Collins. No, the pads aren't on yet and the players are just in helmets and shorts, but for a young player who would love to follow Collins' career path - starting as a rookie and making two Pro Bowls in his first five seasons - taking snaps side-by-side with a polished pro isn't a bad way to learn. "It's really an honor," Burnett said of being paired with Collins for OTAs. "He's a great athlete, a great smart player. Just watching him, asking him questions, (I'm) learning a lot from him, and that helps out a lot." Because Atari Bigby has yet to sign his restricted free agent tender and Derrick Martin is out following ankle surger.. Peprah Excited For Another Chance With Green BayFor a player like Charlie Peprah, who has moved around through three different organizations in his four-year NFL career, the hardest thing about trying to stick around in this league is getting adjusted to a new system, a new playbook and a new environment at each stop.
That's why Peprah couldn't have been more thrilled when he got a contract offer late last month from the Green Bay Packers, the team and organization he knows best. A backup safety and special teams contributor, Peprah played three seasons for the Packers (2006-08) after being claimed off waivers from the New York Giants, the team that drafted him in '06. Last year Peprah injured his knee during training camp in Green Bay and was placed on injured reserve at roster reduction time, ultimately reaching an injury settlement that allowed him to sign with the Atlanta Falcons at midseason. Peprah played only a couple of games with the Falcons and then was offered a minimum-salary contract to retu.. OTA Preview: Defense Moves Into Year 2Last year at this time, heading into the organized team activities (OTAs), the Green Bay Packers were in a major transition stage defensively.
On the field, players in the front seven were shifting positions, some from defensive tackle to end, others from end to outside linebacker. In its offices, the newly assembled coaching staff was still evaluating the players it had to work with, figuring out where everybody fit best. And in the film room, the players were being shown video of other teams that played the 3-4 scheme, to learn the roles and responsibilities before playing the scheme themselves. Fast forward 12 months and the defense is immersed in an entirely different stage of development. Over the next several weeks, while the offense will be starting its usual competitions on the offensive line and the special teams will be getting a look at potential punters and returners, it's the defense whose OTAs will be most unlike those it con.. 'LZ Lambeau' Celebration Coming May 21-23What started out as a one-night gathering inside Lambeau Field has turned into a three-day celebration that will be the biggest non-Packers and non-sporting event in the history of the renovated stadium.
It's called "LZ Lambeau: Welcoming Home Wisconsin's Vietnam Veterans" and it's coming up May 21-23. Between 20,000 and 25,000 people are expected to attend the keynote ceremony inside the stadium bowl on Saturday night, May 22, with thousands more potentially passing through during a weekend designed to honor Vietnam-era veterans for their service and sacrifice for our country. "The Green Bay Packers are proud to be involved in this unique event and to be able to host it at Lambeau Field," President/CEO Mark Murphy said. "It will be a special three days to reflect on a very important time in history." The event was developed through a partnership involving Wisconsin Public Television, The Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs, the Wisconsin Historical So.. |
